Set Rules: How Do You Play Set?

Overview

Gather sets from matching or mismatching cards.

Chaco 2694 Mega Z Pyramid/Cloud Pyramid Z/Cloud Eclipse ca1b16f

Game type: Set matching (perception), Cards

Number of players: 1+

Suggested age: 6+

Game Pieces

Two decks of cards with shapes and colors.

Pregame Setup

Determine who will be the dealer

Shuffle the decks together and deal out 12 cards face up in a rectangle in the playing space where each player can access them.

Playing the Game

When the game starts, each player observes the 12 face-up cards and announces out loud when they see a “set.” The other players check that set to make sure it’s valid, and if it is, then that player takes that set as 1 point. The first player to declare “set” gets control of the board (game pauses).

Sets must be picked up within seconds of calling “set” and other players may not pick up sets until after you have picked up yours. The dealer replaces the 3 cards taken for the set with new cards from the deck.

If a player does not choose a set or selects an improper set then they lose a point and the 3 cards are returned to play.

If all players agree that there is no set available in play then the dealer will deal 3 more cards face up. No new cards will be dealt until the total falls below 12.

Sets are groups of 3 that match either the color, shape, number, or shading. They must be matching or equally different. That is you can have 3 of the same color or 3 cards of different colors, but not 2 cards of matching colors and 1 of different.

Play continues until the deck is depleted. There may be cards left over that do not form a set.

Winning the Game

The player with the most points wins the game. Each set is worth 1 point.
